Nearly a Century of Local Love and Legendary Good Times
Today, we are proud to be the only venue in Oklahoma City on the National Register of Historic Places. We’ve preserved every ounce of that original 1920s magic so that you can make your own history right here. Our venue boast features you simply won’t find anywhere else in OKC:
Making History Since 1928: Our Story, Your Celebration
Long before it was Oklahoma City’s premier destination for spectacular events, our building was born out of a delightfully chaotic neighborhood squabble! Back in the 1920s, local farmers would drive into town to sell their fresh harvest, parking their horse-drawn wagons and trucks right in the middle of downtown streets. It created total gridlock, leaving city merchants in a frenzy and residents wondering where to get their groceries.
Enter local entrepreneur John J. Harden. In 1928, he opened the doors to a massive, centralized hub on the historic former site of the Delmar Gardens Amusement Park. The 40,000-square-foot masterpiece was an instant hit. Downstairs, locals bustled through a vibrant market packed with fresh produce, a bakery, a candy store, and a drug store. Upstairs, the iconic Market Garden Ballroom became the ultimate crown jewel of entertainment, hosting everything from roller-skating and roaring boxing matches to legendary concerts by musical icons like Hank Williams, Count Basie, and Bob Wills.
As time passed, the neighborhood became more industrialized and market activity declined. The buildings eventually fell into disrepair, and the Farmers Public Market faded further from the public eye. However, after years of neglect, Burt and Jody McAnally purchased the six-acre property in July of 2002 from John E. Harden, grandson of the original owner.
Now, as a passion project, and seeded by a long-term vision to revitalize the District, the McAnally’s couldn’t be prouder to celebrate over two decades as the owners of the lovingly restored OKC Farmers Public Market.
